1. General

Gibraltar is a peninsula of less than 7 km², which has been a British overseas territory since 1713. You can get here by road, water or plane as it has its own airport. For the real authentic Spain you do not have to be here, but it is extraordinary to visit a piece of England in Andalusia!

2. Sights

Although Gibraltar is not very large, there are several “high points” on this island. The most characteristic is of course the Rock of Gibraltar. This rock has several beautiful viewpoints and on clear days you can even see the coast of Africa from here. The largest part of the rock is protected nature reserve and there are more than 600 different types of plants. Besides plants you will also find the Berber monkeys who live here in complete freedom.

Gibraltar is full of caves that are part of a long history of the Rock. One of the most famous caves, and the one most easily accessible to visitors, is the spectacular St Michael’s Cave, close to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar. This cave is full of stalactites and stalagmites. A light show of ever-changing colors fills the entire Upper Cavern and soft music follows you as you walk through the vast spaces and down the steep stairs to the rooms downstairs. A unique experience!

3. Culinary delights

Gibraltar is home to numerous restaurants, with the influences of British, Spanish and Moroccan cuisine.

The Kasbar is highly recommended. It is situated in a quiet location, just off the main street. As soon as you enter, you imagine yourself in a fairy tale of 1000 and 1 nights. Here you can enjoy a stylish interior and great food. It is a vegan restaurant, but we promise you one thing: you will certainly not miss the meat! A must try is the cauliflower steak with chimichurri. The Kasbar is highly recommended. It is situated in a quiet location, just off the main street. Would you rather go for something a little less exciting when it comes to food? Then My Wines Gibraltar is a very good choice. The restaurant is built in an old tunnel. Here they serve excellent tapas, but also British dishes such as stews. In addition, the restaurant has its own wine store with more than 300 different wines that they can serve with your chosen dish.

4. Lifestyle

Gibraltar is a lively place on the Spanish coast with typical British influences. Here you will find, for example, the famous red phone booth and the fish and chips stand should not be missing in the scene. You even pay with (Gibraltarese) pounds! Only the pleasant Mediterranean climate and the fact that they do not drive on the left, betrays that you are not in the United Kingdom. Because the peninsula is not large, you can actually do everything within walking distance.

5. Nightlife

The nightlife on Gibraltar can certainly be called lively. Although you will not find any nightclubs here, there are plenty of terraces, wine bars, cafes and pubs.

The Star Tavern is Gibraltar’s oldest cafe. However, don’t expect a dated interior, but a modern cafe where you can eat and taste a variety of beers. There’s even a local story going around that Christopher Columbus stopped here to eat a steak before he discovered America.

For a sublime cocktail and a magnificent view you should be at Aqua Bar. This bar is located on the top floor of the Sunborn Yacht Hotel which is designed in the form of, yes, a real yacht. On the roof terrace you will find cozy seating areas and a small swimming pool and there are regular live performances.

6. Shopping

Gibraltar is a true shopping paradise as it is a VAT free state. The largest shopping street in Gibraltar is Main Street. Here you will find large English chains such as Marks & Spencer and Debenhams, but also many perfumeries, retailers, tobacconists and jewelers.

7. Sports & Leisure

Water sports are excellent on the coast of Gibraltar. There are possibilities to go sailing, but also to go diving. Divers can enjoy themselves here as there are more than 30 shipwrecks on the bottom.

And the Sunborn Yacht Hotel is also worth a visit. This hotel offers you wonderful moments of relaxation. You can use the sauna or a well-deserved body wrap.

8. Beaches & Beach Clubs

There are a total of five different beaches in Gibraltar. The most famous is the sandy beach Sandy Bay. This is a clean beach with restaurants, public showers, toilets and parking.

A great place to drink or eat is Kokonut bar. It is right on the beach and it is always crowded.

Another beach is Catalan Bay beach, this is a small beach on the other side of the Rock of Gibraltar. The beach is locally known as “La Caleta” and it looks tropical because of all the colored houses built at the bottom of the rock.
