Málaga Airport gets €1.5 billion expansion
Málaga-Costa del Sol airport is facing a massive modernization. With a €1.5 billion investment, capacity will be greatly expanded and the passenger experience improved.

Main changes for Málaga airport
One notable innovation is that travelers will no longer have to remove liquids or laptops from their carry-on luggage at security checkpoints in the future. Thanks to the introduction of new 3D scanners, the old restrictions are disappearing. This means that liquids, gels and electronic devices can simply remain in the bag, making checks much faster and more convenient.
In addition, the airport is getting a major expansion:
- The terminal will grow from 80,000 sq. ft. to about 140,000 sq. ft.
- Capacity increases from about 30 million to more than 36 million passengers per year.
- There will be new gates, check-in counters and baggage belts.
- Passport control will be expanded to reduce wait times.
- There will be a separate pier for non-Schengen flights.
Work is scheduled to begin in late 2028.
Sustainability central
In addition to more space and comfort, Málaga Airport is also committed to sustainability. Efforts are being made to reduce CO₂ emissions, use water more efficiently and improve accessibility.
Part of national plan
The investment is part of the DORA III program (2027-2031), in which the Spanish government is allocating nearly €12.8 billion to modernize airports across Spain.
What does this mean for travelers?
For travelers, this will soon mean faster through checks, less waiting time and more convenience. In particular, the elimination of the liquids rule – a source of frustration for years – will make flying from Málaga airport considerably more pleasant.
