The Costa del Sol is one of Spain’s most popular regions for foreign residents. With a mild climate, beautiful beaches and an international atmosphere, the region attracts thousands of expats every year. But what does the distribution of foreigners and international buyers on the Costa del Sol actually look like? And which groups live where?

European expats dominate Costa del Sol

The largest group of foreign residents on the Costa del Sol are Europeans. Britons, Germans, Scandinavians, Dutch and Belgians are particularly strongly represented.

British: Historically the largest group of foreigners. Many British retirees live in Marbella, Estepona and Mijas, attracted by the climate and international community.

Germans and Scandinavians: Especially present in Marbella, Benalmádena and Fuengirola. They often combine permanent residence with vacation homes.

Dutch and Belgians: Their numbers are growing rapidly. Popular places are Marbella, Estepona, Fuengirola and newer coastal municipalities.

These groups often choose luxury homes or apartments close to the beach, with good amenities and an international atmosphere.

Latinos and Moroccans: work and urban presence

In addition to European expats, Latinos and Moroccans also frequent the Costa del Sol.

Latinos, especially from Colombia, Argentina, Venezuela and Ecuador, often live in Málaga city and coastal towns such as Torremolinos and Benalmádena. They tend to work in hospitality, construction or services.

Moroccans concentrate in urban areas and affordable neighborhoods, working in construction, agriculture or tourism.

Unlike European expats, these groups are less likely to live in luxury or vacation homes; their presence is primarily work-related.
