1. General
At only 16 minutes from Málaga airport, you will find one of the most visited vacation destinations on the Costa del Sol, Fuengirola. A cozy busy town with a prominent promenade and a long sandy beach.
2. Sights
One of the many must-sees is the Arabic castle “Castillo de Sohail”. This castle was built in the 10th century and is the symbol of Fuengirola. It is situated on a hill at the mouth of the river. Because it is 38 meters above sea level, you have royal views over the sea and the Sierra de Mijas mountains. There are also regular concerts and festivities.
The archaeological park Yacimiento Romano, also called Finca del Secretario, is definitely worth a visit. It is a Roman open air museum where among other things the remains of a bathhouse can be seen.
3. Culinary delights
In Fuengirola there are a lot of restaurants. Do you feel like Indian or Italian? Or French cuisine? Everything is possible!
One restaurant we like to go to is Dao’s Bar & Thai Restaurant. Beautiful, authentic Thai dishes, served with a friendly smile. The owner, Dao, even speaks a bit of Dutch. They also serve vegetarian dishes.
For the tastiest paella you should go to Juan Playa Restaurante. This typical Spanish restaurant is located right on the beach and has a great view over the sea.
Picoteo in the center of Fuengirola cannot be missed! Here traditional and innovative Spanish dishes come together with a French twist. They also have a very extensive wine list.
4. Lifestyle
You can hardly imagine it, but Fuengirola city used to be a fishing village. In this town there is a lot to do for both young and old. Because of the train connection, it is very easy to travel to the airport or to Málaga. The nightlife continues until the early in the morning. Do you prefer to sit on a terrace with a cup of coffee or do you prefer to parade on the boulevard? Everything is possible here! In the city there are not only Spanish inhabitants but also many people from Scandinavia, England, Belgium and the Netherlands.
5. Nightlife
You can have a great time in Fuengirola when it comes to nightlife. Besides the many cafes and terraces you will also find several clubs here. From salsa, R&B, jazz to house, also here you will find a variety. Pogs is a famous pub known for its live performances. Do you prefer Belgian special beer? Then Bar Belga is the place to be.
6. Shopping
Afternoon shopping? Make it a week. Fuengirola city has a large indoor shopping center “Miramar“. Here you will find stores of many well-known chains such as H&M and Zara. But also a cinema cannot be missing here.
In the center and on the boulevard you can find the smaller souvenir shops and boutiques.
Fuengirola has no less than 3 markets. The Tuesday market is the largest on the Costa del Sol. You will find everything, fruit & vegetables but also clothing and footwear. On the Saturday market sells brocante, antique and vintage stuff. The Sunday market is a true open air museum. Here you can buy and see all kinds of art.
7. Sports & Leisure
Because Fuengirola is located on the coast, many water sports are practiced here. Windsurfing, paddleboarding or a ride on the jet ski are some of them. Fuengirola also has a sailing school.
Several golf courses can be found in the area.
Would you rather take it easy? You can always go to one of the wellness centers for a relaxing day or a lovely massage. Hotel Florida Spa has several packages that you can use.
8. Beaches & Beach Clubs
The sandy beach of Fuengirola is no less than 8 km long. This beach carries a European blue flag, which is an indication of a high value of sand and water hygiene.
You can rent sunbeds and umbrellas almost everywhere and in several places you will also find public toilets and showers. Many pieces are also wheelchair accessible.
There is no lack of beach bars and chiringuitos (Spanish beach bars). La Cubana, Playa Carvajal, is a colorful Caribbean chiringuito. Homemade burgers and wraps are on the menu here. Don’t forget to taste the Cava loves Sangría!
You can eat between the locals at Chiringuito Torillo Playa. They also serve on the beach at your sun bed. The fresh grilled shrimps and octopus must have been eaten once.
