- Why La Cala de Mijas?
1. General
La Cala de Mijas is a charming coastal village just 23 minutes away from Málaga Airport. You will find fewer tourists here than in the nearby cities of Fuengirola and Marbella. Peace and quiet and beach are the characteristics of this town at the Costa del Sol. Although La Cala de Mijas is not big, there is plenty to do!
2. Sights
La Torre de la Batería, a watchtower built in the sixteenth century, is located in the center of La Cala de Mijas. The tower has a height of ten meters and from the top it has a breathtaking view over the sea and the village. Today it houses the Study Center of the watchtowers and the local tourist office.
Furthermore, the village has a beautifully landscaped path that runs along the coastline all the way to Calahonda. During a walk along this path, of no less than 6 km, you will find various (protected) species of flora.
3. Culinary delights
In La Cala de Mijas you will find a wide range of different (international) eateries. One of our favorites is “El Cortijillo”. A typical Spanish restaurant with pure dishes and tapas, pleasant service and all that at a fair price. Don’t miss the homemade Gazpacho!
A real hidden jewel is “The Little Geranium“. This fine dining restaurant, with only a limited number of tables, has an à la carte menu but also a delicious degustation menu with adapted wines. All based on local products.
4. Lifestyle
What was once an authentic fishing village, has now grown into a bustling but quiet town on the (rugged) coast. Almost everything is within walking distance. A wild nightlife you will not find here, but a cozy dinner at one of the local restaurants with friends, children and / or grandchildren belongs to the possibility. La Cala de Mijas is family friendly and breathes a relaxed Spanish atmosphere.
5. Nightlife
In the center there are a number of cafes and cocktail bars. In some of them they also play live music on some days. For the discotheques/dancing it is best to go to Puerto Banus, Marbella.
6. Shopping
Besides banks, supermarkets and souvenir shops you can also enjoy shopping in one of the boutiques. Every Wednesday and Saturday from 09.00 – 14.00 there is a traditional Spanish market on the car park next to the A7 motorway. From bags and flowers to spices and local products, here you find everything.
7. Sports & Leisure
Do you want an active afternoon on the water? Then La Cala de Mijas is the right place for you. Kayaking with the family, waterskiing, parasailing or surfing? It’s all possible! The Costa del Sol is ideal for golf lovers. You will also find beautiful golf courses for both beginners and advanced golfers.
After an intensive day, it’s time to relax in the spa. La Cala Resort has several swimming pools and saunas. Of course a relaxing massage cannot be forgotten.
8. Beaches & Beach Clubs
The beaches of La Cala de Mijas are fully equipped. There is a lifeguard present, public toilets, showers, rental of sunbeds and umbrellas, and you can also easily park your car. This beach carries a European blue flag, which is an indication of a high value of sand and water hygiene.
Beach clubs and chiringuitos (Spanish beach bars), you will also find here of course. Chiringuito Los Moreno is known for its “espeto” freshly grilled sardines on a skewer. For anyone who wants to relax on the beach, and would like a dose of luxury, Unico Beach Mijas is absolutely the right place. Here you can enjoy the beautiful things in life: a glass of bubbles, a delicious lunch and of course the sea!
